Fairfax Media – The writing was not on the wall but online!

June 20, 2012 by Stewart Dawes

Fairfax Media, publishers of Australia”s oldest and most respected newspapers, has taken dramatic action in response, to the ever declining print publishing business model, by announcing the imminent closure of two printing presses and the axing of 1900 jobs. The digital revolution is now well and truly here to stay, at the expense of old technologies and those that it employs. Change has been coming for a decade now, but its force is still shocking, and the market has no time for irrelevancies.

Print newspapers have been dying ever since their river of gold, classified advertising, was redirected online. Digital delivered faster and cheaper results. Publishers have known the end is nigh for sometime, but tradition dies hard, and those noble jounalists, whose jobs depend upon the vested interests of their owner”s advertisers, have been in a state of pre-culling for some years now. Well the axe has been sharpened and fell with frightening speed yesterday.

Phillip Meyer, the author of The Vanishing Newspaper, declared the year 2043 to be his guess, when the printing presses would fall silent. With this dramatic restructuring by Fairfax, this date may indeed be overly optimistic. The old game is over and digital is now the main game in town, for advertising and information distribution. For business owners and marketing managers, many of whom were born in the last half of the twentieth century, adapting to the digital revolution has been challenging. The free nature of the internet and social media has gone against the capitalistic grain of business in the developed world. How Special modifications for athletes & pregnant/nursing moms: Find out how to tailor YOUR 21-Day Sugar buy-detox.com to suit your needs while still achieving the success that many others do. to value advertising on a free medium and how to best market products and brands in the digital sphere?

The importance of search engine optimisation has never been greater, SEO is absolutely vital in an overcrowded and seemingly infinite digital world. What is the point of having something wonderful if nobody can find it? Search is everything! Businesses who have traditionally marketed themselves through the print media – newspapers and magazines – Australia has had more titles per capita of population than any other developed country – are now in an unfamiliar universe. Websites? Social media pages? What to say, where to say it, and how to say it? These are all challenging and pertinent questions.

New digital strategies that may have been put in place, half heartedly, because the old world still existed, may not stand up to the market forces of an unfettered digital universe. We are, more and more, living in a virtual world and to thrive we need to be seen and found. SEO is number one in marketing terms and following this you better have something worth finding in the end. So the expectation on websites will go through the roof, in my opinion, how they look and function in a highly competitive marketplace.

I think that multiple site strategies will be required in this new purely digital age. One site will not be enough, networks and families of sites will be an optimum way of exploiting the crowded digital highway. SEO will become more important and virtual life, for your company or business, on social media and onsite will be the only way forward. Onsite SEO and offsite SEO will be the main game in successful digital marketing.

I ponder whether Pinterest will become more and more an outlet for visual advertising and that the take-up of online magazines and newspapers will now really lift off? Will mobile Ereaders, smart phones and tablets feed our need for visual stimulation in the market?

Fashion SEO: a Visual Merchandising Case Study

June 14, 2012 by Stewart Dawes

best window display visual merchandising designers manufacturers sydney australia

We”ve been asked this question a few times: does an SEO company need to have prior experience in an industry in order to be able to deliver effective SEO outcomes?

In this case study, we”re looking at a business category which we certainly had no experience in at all – the work done by reputable Sydney visual merchandising company EV Young.

This fashion / retail manufacturer had never scored anything on the first ten pages of Google, and in our first meeting we had to talk about what keyphrases they wanted to rank for – then we had to find out how many searches were actually performed by people in their industry – and what kind of people?

We came to understand that their clients are visual merchandisers for Sydney”s luxury and prestige retail outlets – and we needed to get into the heads of visual merchandisers and discover what Google searches they would be most likely to make when searching for the types of creations which EV Young and his company produce.

Not being on the first ten pages has served them fine for the last 50 years they”d been in business – as so much of their work is through word of mouth – but with the tightenings in the fashion retail market, they finally knew they had to think about what the internet could bring them, and how they might market themselves in there also.

Search engine optimisation was their first point of call with us, but also we discussed with them their onsite content and recommended a landing-page focussed sharpening of their content to turn a search engine find into an actual enquiry.

At the 6-week mark of their campaign we were able to report the following dramatic improvements in their rankings:

#4 window displays out of 8.99 million searches / 2,900 monthly searches
#1 and #2 window displays sydney
#10 acrylic displays 590 searches
#8 acrylic display (singular) 3,600 searches
#2 and #3 acrylic displays sydney
#3 acrylic displays perth
window display suppliers sydney floor stands australia display cabinets designers manufacturers fashion retail displays visual merchandising
#3 and #4 acrylic displays melbourne
#2 acrylic displays brisbane
#8 & #25 visual merchandising 8,100 searches
#5 and #19 visual merchandising sydney
#6 window display (singular) out of 40.4 million results / 65,000 monthly searches
In this first stage of the campaign again we were able to use our very high traffic media websites to give the highest possible quality inbound links – this is certainly our greatest market advantage.
Eg we produced, within the first month”s “ramp-up Phase”:
Offsite article on 12-year-old high-traffic media website with the focus on “window display”.
Offsite article on a 9-year-old high traffic media website with the emphasis also on “window display”.
Since there are 65,000 searches on this term, this was clearly the way to go.
There”s no doubt these articles contributed significantly to them achieving a very strong outcome after just 6 weeks for a term which produces 40.4 million search results.
There are scores of other terms we”re currently targeting for them such as point of sale displays, retail display floor stands and many others.
And finally, to brighten the client”s hearts even further, after their non-SEO-ed site had spent years languishing outside of Google Top Ten PAGES (not top ten rankings, they weren”t even in the top ten pages), again in week 6 they cracked #1 out of 23.6 million Australian results for “makeup stands”. Investigation Techniques Training > an SEO Case Study

June 4, 2012 by Stewart Dawes

investigation technique trainers perth training courses workshops sydney australia melbourne brisbane canberra

One of our most recent projects is performing SEO for Perth-based Above and Beyond Training who specialise in investigation training.

It can also be called investigation techniques, and it”s like the humanitarian future evolvement of interrogation techniques.

However it”s not just something used by slightly new age police forces in liberal democracies as a way to get information out of vagabonds that doesn”t involve a Dirty Harry-style thwack.

It”s used by companies, local governments, education institutions and any organisation that needs to get to the bottom of any matter, be it something problematic or something related to an accident or incident.

Applying SEO To The Task

Apart from our usual Swiss-watchmaker-focussed attention to Onsite SEO, we published an article on the high-traffic media website Freshmag.com.au based around the phrase investigation techniques training.

Over the next few weeks we completed a second Offsite SEO article which was published on a 12-year-old high traffic website, titling the article What Are Investigation Techniques?

Both articles gave Above and Beyond Training a massive boost in Google rankings, for example after just 2 months they ranked:

1. investigation training perth #1
2. investigative training perth #3
3. investigation training #10
More work is coming to improve these early sightings:
conflict resolution training perth #7 and #12
conflict resolution training #27
conflict resolution #86 out of 42.3 million results
They also have a Facebook Page: Above & Beyond Training Solutions
Overall we have many more strategies to roll out with Above & Beyond Training – a fascinating subject to explore … and great people to be exploring it with.

The Best ‘Offsite SEO’ in Australia?

May 30, 2012 by Stewart Dawes

What is Offsite SEO?

“Offsite SEO” is one of the most important phrases your business will hear this year.

Now that”s an understatement.

When done well, it is the creation of quality “Offsite SEO Articles” about your business on high-traffic, Google-preferred websites, which then feature precision “Inbound Links” to your website. Links from blogs simply don”e cut it in our SEO world. We only create links from established websites with medium-to-high traffic.

In our many years of performing “Offsite SEO” we have never stooped to Link Farm and the scores of cheap and nasty Offsite SEO methods that so many other SEO operators lapsed into – through laziness, ignorance, or more than likely, through enjoying the huge profit margins between what they charge you, and the 3rd-world countries where they can buy 1000s of dodgy links from dodgy sites and blogs.

Now, with Google”s launch of Google Panda, the chickens have really come home to roost.

All the purveyors of cheap, nasty links on cheap, nasty link farms and “article marketing automation” blogs have been obliterated.

What this means for all those unwitting business owners who had gone with SEO companies who used such dubious practices, is that unfortunately for them, they have suffered massive down-gradings in their listings.

In many cases, they”re having to start again, and have suffered massive losses in income.

We post articles and give inbound links only from the following proven high-traffic highest-ranking websites:

http://www.sydneycafes.com.au – 13 years old, 1000s of unique users per day
http://www.freshmag.com.au – 10 years old, 1500 unique users per day
http://www.cultprojections.com – 6 years old, over 3000 unique users per day
http://www.westcoastcafes.com.au – 11 years old, over 750 unique users per day

We”ve now also partnered with a new supplier of quality editorial with the following Google-approved websites now part of our team:

www.sacredchef.com
www.sacredchef.com.au
www.designsauce.com.au
www.midasword.com.au

So  we hope you”ll make the right choice for your sake – not for our sake, we”re already doing well and have many loyal clients thanks to our proven best practices – in this case, making the right decision about the complex applications of Offsite SEO is about your sake.

Common Search Engine Optimisation Questions & Their Answers

May 15, 2012 by Stewart Dawes

SEO sydney corporate SEO company australia melbourne perth adelaide brisbane

The other day we got an email from a business owner called Pete who asked us a range of questions to ascertain whether we”re a reputable and effective SEO company. As his questions are indicative of the types of questions virtually ever SEO-seeking business person would want answered, we”ve decided to answer them in general terms here.

How long has your company been in business?

We started publishing online magazines in 1999, many of which are still in existence today and rank at the top of Google in an extremely wide range of fields. This is despite, being media enterprises, having had stiff competition from all the large media corporations in Australia. The fact that we could not only outrank these media behemoths on Google and all search engines, but could hold onto #1 rankings on Google against them for over a decade, proved to us that SEO is an activity that can help small companies be giant-killers. So this is what we”ve been doing for our SEO clients ever since.

Do you have long-standing clients?

Not only do we have long-standing clients, but the long-standing clients are the happiest clients we have because every year we achieve ever-higher rankings – and we spread their reach every year by significantly expanding the range of relevant terms that they outsmart their competitors with.

Can you provide some case studies and/or references?

We provide over 30 case studies and testimonials from our clients. All statements are provable with evident Google rankings.

Do you have any previous experience in my industry?

Having previous experience in any given industry is not a pre-requisite to achieving ultimate SEO results. In fact, based on the loyalty that exists between our clients and ourselves, if we had any previous experience in your industry, we wouldn”t be able to work with you because our client retention rate is 95% – so chances are we”d still be working with your competitor. Our policy is strictly to work with only one client per industry – so that we can deliver absolute results – and give them the full benefits of our Offsite SEO and quality inbound links.

What is the duration of the contract?

We”re extremely serious about SEO – and therefore we”re only interested in having clients who are equally serious about the importance of SEO to their business. So we”re only interested in taking on clients who have a minimum 12 months vision for their business around SEO.

Can I cancel the contract at any time?

Having said the above, we still wouldn”t stop a client cancelling a contract if that”s truly what they need to do. However our Inbound Links, being the highest-quality links from our high-traffic websites, are the equivalent of Google Adwords in impact and ongoing revenue. So if a client is cancelling simply because they lack the ethics around mutual prosperity, cancelling on a “I”ve got the rankings I want, adios amigos” basis, then our policy is very clear. We remove all links from our high-traffic websites to theirs. After all, Google don”t keep serving your Adwords once you stop paying them. Also of course we require 30 day”s notice of cancellation.

How often do I pay?

Fees are monthly, payable by credit card in advance of the month”s SEO program on the first of each month.

Is there an up-front fee?

The up-front fee is simply for each month as outlined above, however we usually recommend a client”s first 1-2 months, as a “ramp-up phase”, involve twice the SEO work of subsequent months.

Does this contract have a guarantee?

Google”s directors such as Matt Cutts love to announce loudly that any SEO company who provides a guarantee is a company of charlatans. So we”re damned if we do and damned if we don”t. We just say: look at our proven results.

When will my project start?

When you want it to start.

What type of SEO work happens in the first month?

Onsite SEO in conjunction with Offsite SEO. And in the 2nd month, 3rd and so on.

What type of work do you do every month to improve my rankings (link building, Article writing, navigation set-up, code optimisation etc.)?

All of the above.

How many hours a month will be spent on SEO for my website?

Depends how much you”re paying.

How long should it take to see improvement in rankings?

Depends on what industry you”re in, how much competition you have, what keywords and keyphrases you”re targeting, and what type of website you already have. With some websites we can achieve results within hours – with most it takes 2-4 weeks, but if you”re in real estate, which is saturated, and you”re looking to target the shortest-string phrases possible, then it could be a 6-12 month journey to start to penetrate the higher realms of Google. The more competitive the field, the more lucrative the ROI once you get there. That”s a key imperative of “Corporate SEO”. The most satisfying relationships we have are with business owners who, like us, have no intention of giving up.

Do your methods adhere to the search engine’s rules and guidelines?

What do you reckon?

Do you expect anything from our end to contribute to the SEO work?

The smaller your investment in SEO, the more “homework” you will inevitably be given. If there”s no budget there for article creation, then you and your staff will have to provide content. Also, while we have many happy clients who leave the entire SEO programs to us, preferring to focus their energies on running their newly profitable businesses, nevertheless we recommend clients do participate at whatever level they feel comfortable in the SEO programs, so we can ask questions around keywords and encourage our clients to seek out with their customers the words they used to find them on Google.

Will I get reports? And how often?

Our reports are monthly, sometimes they”re long and other times they”re shorter. Our view is this: we”re the David Beckham of SEO. You don”t pay David Beckham to write reports about how to kick goals. You pay him to kick the goals. Providing reports helps validate our fees to our clients. However spending too much time on reports, when it would be best spent adding essential fuel to your website”s relationship with Google”s algorithms, would be the wrong thing to do.

Will there be email and phone support?

Within reason there is certainly phone and email support. However we anticipate our clients are as professional about this relationship as we are. We”re not into having clients who want to treat us like an IT Support company. We don”t help you fix your email problems. Our focus is SEO. It”s where it belongs. Clients know not to dilute our focus & commitment.

How many people will be working on my project?

We do not believe in spreading the work thinly. In fact you can expect the majority of your SEO campaign to be performed by one person. This SEO professional will have some assistance depending on what is required – e.g. an SEO professional is not required to sit around writing Offsite Articles all week long – but ultimately any such work passed to writers or developers is managed to completion as part of the SEO management role.

Who will be my project manager?

That”s something we work out together.
